Kindergarden

We will be working on a number of computer fundamentals. The primary goal is to get kindergarten students acclimated to a new classroom as well as a new teacher. Some of the things we will be working are include the following:

Parts of the computer: Students will be able to identify key parts  a computer such as screen, computer tower, mouse, mouse pad, keyboard, printer, and smart board. After successful identification students will be able to explain the job and purpose of each of the parts listed above. I will be reading the book from Sesame Street Elmo’s World titled “Computers.”

Styles of Computers: I will discuss with the students all of the different types of computers that are made avaliable for our personal use. We will cover desktops laptops, net books, and smart phones.

Logging in and out of a  LPN:  Students will learn how to log into Memorial School’s local Private Network, by being able to enter a username and password. Students will develop and understanding for why we have to use a username and a password.Students will also learn how to log out of the network when class is finished.

Identification of Software: After st students have developed the confidence and skill to successfully log in on  their own students will learn about the desktop  and icons, and what they are used for.

Opening and closing programs: Students will begin to develop hand eye coordination and mouse control by being able to open a close various computer programs.

Typing a internet Address:  Towards the end of September and most of October the kindergartners will be working on typing in internet addresses. They will understand that all addresses start with www. no matter what site they want to go to. To develop student confidence with this skill we will be typing in a basic address http://www.thecolor.com this site is know as a large online coloring book. Once students have successfully navigated to the site they will be instructed to click on specific categories of pictures, and be able to choose one that they like. Students will start to develop mouse control by dragging the mouse and clicking  to choose  a color of their liking. Students will continue to work on those processes by filling in pictures with various colors to create a multicolored picture.

Keyboard Letter Recognition: Students will continue to learn how to navigate to other websites to understand that they are able to explore the power of the internet. We will progress to http://www.tvokids.com to change our focus from mouse control to letter recognition on the keyboard. Students are going to play a game called keyboard climber and Keyboard Climber #2 in which they will have to recognize lower case and capital letter, and numbers on their computer screen then find it on their keyboard. If the students identify the correct letter students progress to the next level. This activity is to develop speed and accuracy of letter recognition.

Kindergarten students  will be focusing on Language Arts Literacy by using a web-based program called RAZ kids. This program gives students hundreds of interactive, leveled books ranging from  27 levels of difficulty, covering a wide range of subjects. In addition to engaging kids at their reading level and in their area of interest, this award-winning student-centered site gives kids 24/7 Web access to the practice they need to become better, more confident readers.
